Schools who have designed rockets to use motors other than Estes, should apply for their RCA document as soon as possible.

Although an explosives license is no longer required to purchase small quantities of AP motors, a Recipient Competent Authority (RCA) document is still required in order to ship and transport them. You will need to send a copy of this to a vendor in order to allow them to ship the motors to you legally.

How do I get An RCA is a common question that we get asked frequently, so we have an article in our information base and a draft letter already written for you to copy and post/email in to the HSE. This may take a week or take several to receive, it just depends on the HSE workload.

AN RCA IS NOT REQUIRED IF YOU PLAN TO USE ESTES MOTORS FOR YOUR ROCKET.

Teams should also be thinking about their engine choice and where to get them. Typically most teams will be using similar engines and vendors do not typically have large stocks of engines at this time of year. Engines come from the USA and have to be imported. Importing explosives is not cheap in small quantities or quick, large engine orders can take weeks to get in, so make your choice very soon!
